20May22 Waterski Council publishes 2022 Rules version 2

2022 Waterski Rulebook V2

20May22 Waterski Council votes unanimously to make rules changes that are effective immediately

The World Waterski Council has issued version 2 of the 2022 Rulebook. There are two changes that require some explanation.

Rule 8.15 Revision - This update has been necessary because we are dealing with the introduction and adoption of new technology in the form of Boat Path Measurement Systems (BPMS), specifically SurePath which is now providing detailed data on Boat Path performance which has simply not been available before.

It is clear from this data and the recent practical experience in competitions that a further modification to the rule was necessary. Data will continue to be monitored throughout this season and if any further changes are considered necessary these will be done as part of the annual Rules review process at the end of the year.

Rule 10.11 Revision - The use of Surepath has again provided significant data on boat path during jumping. With the current rule stipulating a “straight path” it doesn’t allow the driver to compensate for the skiers pull to the ramp thus creating a potentially unsafe scenario.

04Mar22 IWWF Executive Board adopts IOC recommendation on Russia and Belarus

The IWWF Bureau met yesterday and, in light of the current circumstances, agreed on the following resolution:

a. IWWF will not invite or allow the participation of Russia and Belarus athletes and officials in all IWWF approved events.

b. IWWF will not approve any event in Russia or Belarus.

All IWWF Confederations and affiliated Federations are required to comply with this resolution.

This decision aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s recent recommendation.

The IWWF is appalled by the war in Ukraine and its impact on innocent athletes, and deeply regrets that they are caught in this situation. The IWWF is looking forward to a speedy resolution of the conflict after which these athletes and officials will be welcomed back.

04Jun21 2020 World Over-35 Championships cancelled

The IWWF and French Waterski & Wakeboard Federation have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 IWWF World Over-35 Waterski Championships.

The event was originally scheduled to be held at Baurech Lake in France in September 2020 and then rescheduled to September 2021.

This decision was made in consultation with the event organiser, IWWF President, IWWF European Confederation President, IWWF World Waterski Council and IWWF Medical Committee.

With the global pandemic still affecting international travel, current quarantine requirements in France for some countries which will impact participation significantly and the uncertainties of organising an event in 3-months time, it was decided that cancelling the event is the best course of action, following IWWF’s social responsibility philosophy and to ensure the well-being of organizers and athletes.

The next IWWF World Over-35 Waterski Championships are scheduled to be held in 2022 and the host and venue will be announced in due course.

An important change that is effective immediately was made regarding the rope release as follows:

Recent competitions have shown the release person deliberately using the rope release (1m rope) to help the skier. This was never the intention of the rule change in 2019. It was decided unanimously to reinstate in rule 15.12 the wording “The release person may not adjust or move the rope in any way to take up slack or allow extra length. He must hold it in one position or release it. Using the rope to intentionally aid the skier will subject the skier to disqualification”. This unanimous decision will be posted on May 21st and come into immediate effect.

07May21 Waterski Council replaces Elite Rankings with Pro Tour

The Elite Rankings were established in 2003 and continued through 2020. Now the Waterski Council has set the rules for a Pro Tour that replaces the Elite Rankings. There is a Pro Tour Leaderboard that will show the accumulated Pro points as the season progresses until a final Champion is crowned.

31Jan21 The October 2020 Ranking list is now available

The Waterski Council decided that because of the effects of the global pandemic which meant that many skiers did not have the opportunity to record scores in 2020 and that the total number of scores was greatly reduced, that the 2020 Rankings would be a combination of the 2019 rankings and the 2020 rankings. One important decision is that skiers would at least retain their 2019 ranking position in the 2020 rankings. The effect of this is that the actual ranking number assigned may not be in sequential order but nevertheless that is the official ranking.

17Sep18 Tournament Council modifies overall calculation for 35+ divisions in jumping

The tournament council modified the current jump formulas.
The formula used a 10m offset for all men's divisions and a 7m offset for all women's divisions. Since the distances get less in the older divisions, this gave a disproportionate number of points per meter to the older divisions.
Now each division will have its own offsets as follows:
DivisionOffset
Men 35+subtract 20
Men 45+subtract 15
Men 55+subtract 10
Men 65+subtract 0
Women 35+subtract 7
Women 45+subtract 0
Women 55+add 5
Women 65+add 10

These formulas will be in effect for the World 35+ Championships in November.

02Jul17 Ryan Dodd (Can) News Flash Stuns World Of Waterskiing

While we await confirmations and IWWF Approval, Ryan Dodd must be smiling tonight. Reports state that he has achieved what has to be a stunning life's ambition - to add a World Jump Record to his title of World Jump Champion. All in our sport know that Freddy Krueger (USA) has totally dominated the World Record Books since 2005 - another extraordinary achievement. Ryan Dodd's 77.4m / 254ft distance behind the Nautique 200 driven by Les Todd now leaps ahead of Freddy Krueger's 76.2m. It has been a fantastic few years for Ryan Dodd with US Masters, US Open, Vladimir Filin and Sentosa Night Jump titles. Fingers crossed for final confirmations and IWWF approval for this Nautique sponsored athlete and his Pending World Jump Record. Chief Judge was Bill Wenner.

27Apr17 In Memoriam

Willa Worthington Mcguire Cook 1928-2017

On Saturday, April 22nd, our sport sadly lost a true super star. Willa Worthington McGuire Cook, better known to her friends as Willa Cook, passed away at the age of 89 following an extraordinary career on the water which dates back to 1942. A three-time World Overall Waterski Champion, originally from Lake Oswego in Oregon, USA, she is recognized as the greatest female Show Skier of all time. She represented the USA at four World Waterski Championships in Juan Les Pins, France 1949, Cypress Gardens USA 1950, Toronto Canada 1953 and Beirut, Lebanon 1955. Her Show Ski career really took off in 1947 and in 1948, Pioneer Dick Pope invited her to join the famous Cypress Gardens Show. For the following 10 years, she was regarded as the star of the show. Designing Show costumes, innovating new Show tricks, directing choreography and films, performing on TV and in Movies, all came naturally to Willa. She has made an extraordinary contribution to our sport and will be sadly missed by her many friends and fans around the world. May she rest in peace.

22Aug16 Barefoot Waterski World Champions Crowned Last Night Following Spectacular Show

Winning Teams
Winning Teams

The 2016 World Barefoot Waterski Championships are over after an incredible day of competition that had perennial champions and young guns facing off on the water of the Blue Moo.

New Zealand's Georgia Groen captured the Womens Overall title for the first time from Australia's Ashleigh Stebbeings. Stebbeings won Slalom, Groen won Tricks. But the overall title all came down to jump with Stebbeings needing to land a record-breaking 22 meter jump to win it all. She landed a 21.9 meter jump to set a world record but it was just short of getting the points necessary to win overall. Stebbeings walks away from the championships with the jump world record and a pending slalom world record. Her performance helped lead Australia to the top of the open team competition.

The mens competition was just as exciting as David Small of Great Britain won the overall title for the sixth time in a row. Keith St. Onge of the USA won slalom and Small won Tricks with yet another pending world record. St. Onge also set a pending tricks world record with his second place finish. The surprise of the night was 13-year-old Jackson Gerard of the USA, Junior Boys Overall champion, who joined Small and St. Onge on the medal podium in the bronze position with a trick run of 11,900 points.

The finals for mens jump were held under the lights in front of a raucous evening crowd. The Queen would have been proud as Small won jump with a 26.9 meter jump followed closely by St. Onge and young Tom Heaps, the competitor from Great Britain who set the junior world jump record earlier in the week.

Another record-breaking day at the 2016 World Barefoot Waterski Championships in Alma Center, Wisconsin as the team competition wraps up at the Blue Moo.

The day kicked off as Ashleigh Stebbeings AUS set a pending World Slalom Record of 18 in the semi-final round of the Open Women's Division. Stebbeings’ performance helped lead the Australian team to victory in the Open Division Team competition.

The Junior and Senior World Championships finished up with the naming of the Team and Overall Champions. Ken Derry of Australia captured the Senior Mens Overall title and Teri Jones of the USA won the Senior Women's Overall. The Senior Team title went to the USA.

Lexi McCauley USA

In the Junior division, it was all red, white and blue with Jackson Gerard of the USA winning the Boys Overall title and Lexi McCauley of the USA winning the Girls Overall title. McCauley won the Gold in Slalom, Tricks and Jump, propelling the U.S. Junior Team to top of the Team competition. 05Jul16 Experimental Ranking systems being considered by IWWF Tournament Council

The IWWF TC is evaluating two proposed ranking systems to replace the current performance based system. The first system is currently used by the cableski division and is based on placement. Points are given for specific placement and then modified based on the type of tournament and the number of ranked skiers in the competition. A technical description and the results of this system which is dynamic based on the last year's performances can be seen at: http://www.iwsftournament.com/homologation/DisplayRanking.php

The second system is a system currently in use by some sports and games associations, notably the Chess Federation, called the ELO system after its creator. The system establishes a ranking for each competitor. When the athletes compete, their probability of success is calculated based on the rankings of the skiers in the event. How each skier does against his calculated probability raises or lowers his ranking. A technical description and the results of this system which is dynamic based on the performances starting on May 1, 2016 can be seen at: http://www.iwsftournament.com/homologation/eloDisplayRanking.php
The initial rankings are based on the May 1 performance ranking list.

Permanent links to these results are under the ranking lists header in the left column on iwwfed.com

15Jun16 Aktion Parks Announces Plans For Third Boat & Cable Park – Elite Cable Park

ORLANDO, FL (June 15, 2016) – Today, Aktion Parks, a subsidiary of Correct Craft, announced plans to build its third boat and cable park, Elite Cable Park (ECP), in partnership with the USA Water Ski Foundation (USA-WSF).

Elite Cable Park will be part of USA-WSF’s new headquarters and training center to be built at the city of Auburndale’s $25 million Lake Myrtle Sports Complex located at 905 Lake Myrtle Park Road, Auburndale, FL 33823.

Situated on Lake Myrtle, a beautiful 76-acre freshwater lake, ECP will be staffed with experienced coaches offering lessons in wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and other watersports of all skill levels. USA-WSF’s Executive Director Tracy Mattes stated, “The Aktion Parks team has an outstanding reputation in the industry for delivering top service with integrity and we are excited to have them operating this park.” Mattes added, “With more than 100,000 visitors coming through the park each year for multiple sports, including soccer, baseball, and youth football, the water sports complex has a built-in audience and will provide opportunities to create synergies with other sporting and community events.”

Bill Yeargin, CEO of Correct Craft (owner of Aktion Parks) stated, “We are thrilled to partner with USA-WSF to develop this outstanding new cable park. ECP will live up to its ‘Elite’ name and offer our customers exceptional experiences!”

Fully opening in 2018, ECP will be a world-class training facility as well as an international destination to experience watersports. In addition to ECP, USA-WSF’s new facility will include a new headquarters building, three tournament ski lakes, a café on the water, and a pro shop. 06May16 IWWF introduces experimental placement ranking system

The IWWF has created an experimental Placement Ranking List. Skiers earn points based on the place they finished rather than the performance. Also factored in is the ranking of other skiers in the tournament if they are in the top 60 and the type of tournament.
Click here for a detailed description.

The rankings use the tournament data submitted scores and are dynamic, being updated every midnight and using scores in the preceding one year period.

As the system is experimental, it will be evaluated and modified as necessary. The goal is to replace the performance ranking with the placement ranking to reflect the importance of competition rather than raw results.

28Jan16 2016 FISU World University Water Ski Championships
Ogata Village, Akita Prefecture, Japan

We are receiving many questions concerning registration through the new FISU online Registration System (OAC). Because of the registration timeline for our event, we find ourselves as one of the first to go through the process.

First of all, all of our teams must be registered by their respective National University Sports Federations. Here is the link to all FISU Member Federations, in case you need contact information.

Here is the link to the FISU Registration System. When you click it, you will see a page that asks you to enter your Username/email address and a password to sign in. The problem is that these codes belong to the NUSF in each country so you will either have to get them from the NUSF or have them handle the registration for you. The best way is to first contact your NUSF and see how they would like to handle your teams registration.

Sorry for the confusion. This will all be ironed out shortly but, as I said, we are all doing this for the first time and it will take a while to smooth things out. If you have any questions or problems, please contact me (philchase@sbcglobal.net) directly and I will try to answer your questions or get the answers directly from FISU and/or the Organizing Committee.

Thanks for your patience.

Following the recent sad loss of Andy Mapple, regarded as the greatest Slalom Skier of all time, a celebration of his life was held on Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Orlando. Following the service, a special gathering was organised by his wife Deena and son and daughter Michael and Elyssa at the Mapple Performance Center on West Sand Lake Road in Orlando. It was a very moving tribute with videos, photos and many excellent speeches.

Over 500 people attended this remarkable commemoration – many from the USA, Canada, Europe and as far as Australia. This included IWWF President Kuno Ritschard and a large number of our international stars – Kris and Bob Lapoint, Carl Roberge, Wade Cox, George Athans, Jodi Fisher, Camille Duvall, Ricky McCormick, Liz Allen, Lisa StJohn, Freddie Krueger, Scot Ellis, Rob Shirley, Fran Hynes, Walter Meloon and many, many others. Each person present received a special memorial tag.

During the Service, the Pastor summarized the sad thoughts of all who were fortunate to know Andy Mapple with the words “You never know how tall a tree is until it falls from the forest” Our thoughts are with all the Mapple family.

My first memory of Willy Stähle, 1971 World and 1972 Olympic Trick champion, many times European champion dates back at 1968. We were both 14 years old competing at the same tournament in Belgium and she beat me in tricks with just a pass. Fond memories in the waterskiing world. Sometimes we even shared a room such as during the Europeans in South Africa. At the Worlds in London 1975 we even shared a spot in the tournament. We were second in slalom after the semifinals. This time I beat her.

It is with great sadness that I have heard about her passing. We stayed friends, long distance friends, after our skiing career ended. She quit long before me. After 1975 she got bored with waterskiing and picked up another sport:parachuting in which she again excelled.

It is during practice of this sport that a stupid incident happened to her. A photographer hit her during a flight for a photo shoot and she finished landing unconscious and therefore paralyzed at age 29

She was a beautiful and talented skier, but somehow she had a sad side. This bonded us. After her accident, life was hard for her and she picked up art. She became an artist.

The last years were not happy for her. Now she was looked after with love and kindness by her family and by two waterski friends Marlon Van Dyk and Shira Waage. They did a wonderful job but lately she did not even want to see them any more. I think she was tired. I hope that it is better for you now Willy.

We all will miss not only a great waterski champion but your wonderful smile and friendship.

Andy Mapple GBR O.B.E. 1962 - 2015

Our Sport was both greatly shocked and very saddened this weekend to hear of the sudden passing of Andy Mapple GBR at the young age of just 52 years. We especially offer our sincere condolences to his wife Deena and children Michael and Elyssa and to all his family and many friends who will feel this great loss today.

Born in Lancashire in England on November 3rd 1962, Andy started waterskiing at the tender age of 13. Although not immediately an enthusiast, he was quickly inspired by the great stars of the day. Off the water, some of his many special moments include his marriage in 1987 to one of the greatest Overall Waterskiers of her generation, Deena Brush, in 2002 receiving the O.B.E award from HRH Queen Elizabeth, and after his retirement in 2004, working on the design and manufacture of Slalom Skis and Tournament Boats with companies such as Nautique, and finally the creation of Mapple Skis, his life’s dream. As Andy stated at that time, his objective was to help build future Waterski champions at all levels. On the water, Andy’s extraordinary achievements are unparalleled. These include breaking the World Slalom Record eleven times, capturing the title of World Slalom Champion six times, becoming Slalom Champion of both the US Masters and Moomba Masters a total of fourteen times, US Open Slalom Champion 15 times and many others including World Cup Champion. In all, he won a total of 168 professional Slalom titles during his career. He was inducted into the International Hall of Fame in 2011.

Few in our Sport will ever receive the recognition and admiration won by Andy Mapple. He truly was a very special person on so many levels. May he rest in peace.

On behalf of the whole Waterski Family

Kuno Ritschard, IWWF President

30Jun15 Wakeboard And The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

Following Olympic Agenda 2020 announcements, new reforms agreed by the IOC for the Olympic Games published last December gave Games Organisers permission to propose one or more additional events to be included in the programme. All IOC recognized International Federations, including the IWWF, could make inclusion proposals. The new “events” based system replaced the limit of 28 sports of the past. This would greatly facilitate the addition of new events without the removal of entire sports.

11Jan15 In Memoriam

John Hoiles GBR 1932 - 2015

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of John Hoiles (Great Britain) on 6th January 2015 at the age of 82 years. John was diagnosed with Leukaemia in mid-December and following a very short illness he passed away peacefully. Our thoughts go out to his family, his wife Mary and their sons Philip and Tim and their families.

The photo shows at a recent photo at his local golf club - his passion for golf existed for a long time.

Prior to his waterskiing career John had been heavily involved in Powerboat Racing too, being part of the team who won the famous Cowes-Torquay-Cowes Race aboard "I Like It Too" in 1976.

John was one of the driving forces behind the development of Waterski Racing being involved at first in Great Britain and then internationally. He was the first Chairman of the European Racing Commission formed in 1975 and went on to become the first Chairman of the World Racing Council formed in 1978. This led to the first World Waterski Racing Championships being held in Great Britain in 1979 - with races on the sea at Whitstable (John's home town), on the river Thames estuary at Allhallows in Kent and on a lake in London, the Welsh Harp.

John was a larger than life character and always a true enthusiast for the sport. He lived life to the full and was a huge amount of fun to be with - and those memories will live on for ever for me. I was privileged to work with him on the British Racing Committee and at European and World level assisting in the organisation of an assortment of racing events and the administration of the sport generally. Characters like John Hoiles make a big impression on one's life, and I was proud and honoured to be his friend.

In recognition of his long service to the sport of waterskiing, John was made an Honorary Member of the Europe & Africa Confederation in 1990.

Rest in Peace John, alongside many other of your friends in waterskiing.

Brad Smeele
Brad Smeele

At 11.00am last Sunday morning while training in Florida, two-time world Junior Wakeboard Champion Brad Smeele 27 crashed and shattered his C4 neck vertebrae. Following over eight hours of emergency surgery this week the prognosis at this early stage is that he may suffer serious long term paralysis. Riders and those in our sport around the world have rallied to help in fundraising as the costs of transport home, surgery and aftercare are enormous. All wishing to help Brad Smeele and his family at this time are urged to make a donation, however large or small, to the Brad Smeele Foundation - Link below.

Brad Smeele’s mother, joined by her son Alex, has flown from New Zealand to be with her son. The estimated cost of just bringing Brad home to Auckland is $200,000, even before his long term medical care begins.

IWWF Marketing & Media Chairman, Des Burke-Kennedy, was received this week in Dublin, Ireland, by Patrick Hickey, IOC Executive Board Member, President of the Irish Olympic Council, and President of the European Olympic Committees. He is also spearheading the first European Games scheduled for 2015 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The global boom in Cable Wakeboard was discussed and also the IWWF offer of help and support in the selection of new Sports for Olympic inclusion in the future.

All IWWF Federations are encouraged to urgently make contact with their own Olympic Committees, if they have not already done so, as this is important for the future development of our Sport. Don Llewellyn (CAN) 1950 - 2014

Following recent heart surgery, Donald Lewis Llewellyn sadly passed away earlier this week and we offer our condolences to his entire family and many friends around the world. Known internationally for his exceptional life-long dedication to the sport of Waterskiing and in particular to Three Event Competition, he was the father of two of the most talented athletes in the history of Waterskiing, Jaret and Kreg. His innovating role in Canada where he was involved with the National Team for over 10 years was admired by many and in particular in the area of coaching. The fruits of his enormous contribution can be clearly seen in both his achievements and those of his sons and National and International level.

26Mar14 Overall Champions crowned at World Barefoot Championships in Mulwala, Australia

David Small (GBR) and Ashleigh Stebbeings (AUS) defend their overall titles and get crowned World Champions once again! David Small tied the world trick record twice and posted a personal best in slalom on his route to another overall title. Ashleigh Stebbeings set a new woman's World Record in tricks of 10,100 pts, a new World Record in jump of 21.7M and tied the World Record in slalom with 17.0 to take the woman's overall with a perfect score of 3000pts.

After a disappointing first round of tricks that left him out of the semi finals and sealed his fate in the overall Keith St. Onge (USA) regrouped his energy to win the slalom title early in the day of the finals then ended the tournament with a huge win in the jump event. Keith's 26.6M jump bested the rest of the field including David Small who has held the world jump title for 12 straight years - since 2002. This was Keith's first world title in the jump event making him one of only four men in history to hold a gold medal in every event and overall. Keith joins the legends of the sport, Brett Wing (AUS), Mike Seiple (USA) and Ron Scarpa (USA) with this historic achievement.

Results of the event can be found at: http://bfoot.keane.co.nz/index.php?cmd=tournamentresult_view&tournament_id=17

21Mar14 World Junior Championships in Ukraine cancelled

It is with great regret that we announce that the Ukrainian Federation has cancelled their hosting of the 2014 World Junior Championships due to take place in Dnepropetrovsk In August.

The organisers had hoped that the situation would calm down well before the Championships were due to take place.

Unfortunately this is not the case, and with the political situation as it is, it was better to take the decision now rather than wait any longer.

This is a great shame for the organisers, the IWWF and the skiers involved, as we are convinced this would have been a very good venue.

The IWWF President is already in negotiation with another organiser and as soon as the venue and dates are finalised all Federations will be notified immediately.

Our thoughts are with our Ukrainian friends at this difficult time.

Freddy Krueger jumps 65.9m
Freddy Krueger jumps 65.9m

Jacinta Carroll has a perfect landing on her 3rd jump

Both Jacinta Carroll and Freddy Kruger apparently were following the same script in today's jump Finals at the Mandurah World Cup. Each skier was the top seed and last out on the water. Each skier after two jumps had not even achieved a score that would put them on the podium.
Jacinta Carroll set up her third jump and soared 51.1m for the longest jump of the women's competition and snatching 1st place from World Record holder Natallia Berdnikava BLR and leaving Jutta Lami FIN at 3rd.
Similarly, Freddy Krueger dug in and just bested the competition with a 65.9m effort. Left behind were Bojan Schipner GER at 65.3 m and Igor Morozov RUS at 65.0m - a very close finish.

15Mar14 Freddy Kruger USA and Jacinta Carroll AUS lead the Mandurah World Cup after the preliminary round.

Walter Crespi – Italy 1931-2013

Walter joined the European Racing Council at its conception as the F.I.S.N representative. As the Racing Organization throughout Europe progressed I asked him to join me in the effort to progress the World Status.

We met with representatives from Australia and the U.S.A with J.J.Finsterwald and Popoff in Australia and arrived at the formation of the World Council. From then Walter helped me with the smooth running of this council, of which the first World Championships were held in LONDON in September 1979.

With his support Water Ski Racing was established World Wide and has now been running bi-annually for 34 years. Walter was an international judge and has been strongly involved in the organisation of the famous Giro del Lario race and the Racing World Championships in Italy.

Not only did he assist me, but he was my friend, and a good friend to many other members of both Councils.

John Hoiles, former World Racing Council President 1979-1991

05Nov13 Ian Birdsall GBR to be awarded the Order of Merit

Ian Birdsall
Ian Birdsall

It has just been announced that Ian Birdsall will be awarded the Order of Merit during the forthcoming International Hall of Fame Ceremony in Santiago, Chile, on Thursday, November 28th. This distinction is granted at the discretion of the IWWF Executive Board to individuals who have made a significant contribution to our sport outside the framework of the general International Hall of Fame rules. Having just retired as MasterCraft’s Vice President of International Business, Ian has actively promoted our sport for over 40 years. In 1975, his relationship began with MasterCraft. In establishing MasterCraft UK with its own manufacturing facilities, he went on to set up Dealerships in over 30 countries in developing the global brand. In 2004, he signed an agreement with the IWWF as exclusive boat sponsors of the World Cup series which has continued to this day. Sponsoring many of our top skiers and riders, organizing, running and funding national and international competitions and generally supporting IWWF marketing efforts, Ian Birdsall has played a significant part in the success of our sport over these years which will be fully recognized at the November ceremony.

George Blair (USA) 1915 - 2013

George Blair, known worldwide to so many as “Banana George“, has passed away peacefully just three months before celebrating his 99th birthday. We have lost a great friend and true ambassador of our sport. George was an indefatigable barefoot skier who travelled the world for almost fifty years promoting the sport of water skiing and barefooting wherever possible. His achievements have exploded the myth that water skiing is strictly for the young and have provided inspiration for thousands of water skiers both young and old.

George only started skiing at the age of 40 and barefooting at 46. Apart from owning two Ski Schools, starring at Cypress Gardens and thrilling audiences on the water, he became the most popular barefoot water skier in the world.

He is also probably the only man who has barefoot water-skied on every continent. I had the privilege of meeting George and his wife JoAnne many times all over the World. It was my great pleasure to present to him in 2003 the Order of Merit of the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and his children at this sad time. The Waterski Family will never forget George and he will forever remain in our memory.

Kuno Ritschard, IWWF President

John Wilson (GBR) 1937 - 2013

It is with great sadness that I write of the passing of John Wilson GBR. John was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease a couple of years ago, but it was to be a virulent cancer which took his life after a three month illness this year.

John Wilson gave a huge part of his life to waterskiing. He started skiing in his home county of Yorkshire in 1958 and became a Club Official, then a National Official, and he became an International Official in 1967. He judged internationally and then started specialising as an International Homologator. In which capacity he travelled the World - being Homologator at many European and World events, including the World Cup. He was, of course, an important part of the British Waterski team of officials and committee members and was involved in the organisation of some really big events in Britain, including 2 World Championships, many European Championships and several World Cup events. His role in ensuring the technical installations were correct was most important, and he prided himself on providing the latest technical kit.

When anyone speaks of John they use the words "gentleman" and "professional" and indeed he was both. A sign of his commitment to the sport is that he is one of the very few people to have attended every Europe & Africa Officials Seminar, held annually since 1996 - and we were especially delighted that he came to the 2013 Seminar held in Spain in April. We could all see it was a tiring situation for him, but he stuck to the old formula and stayed up late every night for the official "bar" meetings! He was also a lot of fun to be with at competitions and there are some pretty fun tales to relate, which perhaps are best not contained in this tribute.

Waterskiing has lost a true friend, a dedicated worker and a most knowledgeable man. Our sympathies are extended to his wife Annabelle (pictured here with him in 2011 at the British Waterski Ball) and his children Joanne and Richard.

Following days of practice and many months of preparation, the IWWF WAKEBOARD 2020 VISION presentation team met the full Executive Board of the IOC today. The IOC President opened the formal meeting and our IWWF Team was invited to make a full presentation on "Why Wakeboard" Our team comprised Kuno Ritschard SUI, Andres Botero COL, Gill Hill GBR, Des Burke-Kennedy IRL, Varno Laco CRO and Argy Daskalopolous SIN. In comments to the very large Press corps following the presentation, the IWWF team confirmed that the comprehensive presentation went very well and that the response from the IOC Executive Board really was very good. As a youth focused 15-35 cool sport, it really ticks all the IOC boxes. The Press showed particular interest in the low cost element and its youth focus.

Later this evening, the IOC have called a Press Conference. Following the much publicised Wrestling removal from the Games and its later reintroduction to the 2020 short list, the Press interest is enormous. The IWWF Team will attend this Conference here in St Petersburg at 19.30hrs local time
